Chapter 01
Engineered, prefinished or unfinished
We carry engineered, prefinished and unfinished hardwood, and the right one comes down to your house. Engineered hardwood usually handles Yakima's dry summers and cold winters better, because its layered construction is more stable. Solid hardwood can be refinished more times and lasts longer on main and upper floors.
Prefinished boards come with the finish already on. Unfinished boards are finished after they are installed. Either way, hardwood is known for strength and a long life, and with occasional refinishing it can look new again and last for generations.

Oak, maple, hickory and walnut
We stock popular species including oak, maple, hickory and walnut, each with a different look and hardness. Oak is the most popular and the most versatile. Hickory is the hardest, which is why it tends to win in busy homes.
Hardwood has a natural beauty that suits nearly any style, and its warmth makes a house feel welcoming. Some materials follow trends that fade fast. Wood has not stopped being in style.
It is also a natural surface that is easy to clean and does not trap dust or allergens, a good fit for anyone who wants a healthier home.
Chapter 03
Subfloor, acclimation and moisture
A hardwood floor is only as good as what is under it. Our in-house team handles subfloor prep, acclimation, moisture testing and installation directly, without subcontractors, so the crew that tests your subfloor is the same crew that lays the boards.
Hardwood can go in a kitchen with care around sinks and dishwashers, where water is common. If moisture is a worry, many Yakima homeowners pick hardwood for the living areas and luxury vinyl for the kitchen.
Hardwood installed by our own in-house team, never subcontractors, from our showroom at 713 S. 1st Street, Yakima. Call (509) 823-1060 for a free in-home measurement.

Three ways to buy hardwood
Each type comes in a big selection of colors, finishes and styles, and the swatches online are just an example. If you find something you love, we can order it or tell you whether it is already in the showroom. On a budget or after something different? Look at our laminate too.
- Engineered Hardwood
- Layered construction that is more stable through Yakima's dry summers and cold winters. It usually runs a bit less than solid.
- Prefinished Hardwood
- Sanded and finished at the factory, so the floor arrives ready to walk on once it is down.
- Unfinished Hardwood
- Raw wood, finished after it is installed. Solid wood can be refinished more times and lasts longer on main and upper floors.

- HickoryThe hardest of the group, built for busy homes.
- WalnutA deeper, richer tone, with a different hardness again.

What hardwood costs
Hardwood cost depends on the species, whether it is solid or engineered, and the installation. Engineered usually runs a bit less than solid. For an exact number, call us for a free measurement, and read our hardwood buying guide on the blog.
Stairs are a good place to see what a finished hardwood job can do. Treads and risers carry every footstep, and they are the first thing people see from the entry. See more finished jobs in our gallery.
